- GUIZOT, [François] De la democratie en France. [Janvier 1849]. Paris, Victor Masson, 1849 8vo, (iv) + 157 + (3)pp, ink stamp on blank verso of title and blank verso of final leaf of the Oxford and Cambridge University Club, slight stain on extreme outer edge of first few leaves, contemporary dark green half morocco gilt. A good copy. First edition. Einaudi 2810. Stammhammer I, p.99. Not in Goldsmiths. François Guizot [1787-1874], French historian and statesman, was for a time leader of the 'Doctrinaires', the political party which favoured a constitutional monarchy. Indeed under the July Monarchy [1830-1848] his career was wholly political. He was French Ambassador in London for a few months in 1840, and then became Foreign Minister and Prime Minister. His downfall came with the February [1848] Revolution, for which his policy was held largely responsible. The present essay is a cri de coeur written in the days after the 1848 Revolution in which Guizot sets out in detail his views of republicanism on the one hand and a constitutional monarchy on the other.
