- [RAIKES, Richard?] Considerations on the alliance between Christianity & commerce, applied to the present state of this country. London: Cadell and Davies, 1806 8vo, vi + (3)-81pp, very slight spotting and browning, recently well bound in cloth, spine lettered in gilt. A good copy, with the half-title. First edition. Kress B.5098. Goldsmiths 19170. Williams II, 542 (but suggesting the author is 'J' Raikes). Not in Black. CU + NLS + BL + Bodleian copies in NSTC. The essay is a thoughtful and well-organised commentary on the pitfalls of industrial and commercial prosperity. It includes a number of hard-hitting suggestions, thus (p.78): "wealthy citizens (should) have the spirit to bestow a portion of their leisure time and surplus property on public concerns, instead of lavishing the whole on vanity and voluptuousness." Keywords :- commerce, Christian trade Price - £100 |
