IN DEFENCE OF PROPERTY - THIERS, Louis Adolphe De la propriété. Paris, Paulin, Lheureux et Cie, 1848 8vo, (4) + 439pp, complete with the half-title, occasional light spotting, contemporary maroon half roan, spine fully gilt with raised bands, marbled edges, silk marker. A very good copy. First edition. Einaudi 5585. Goldsmiths 36120. Not in Kress. A defence of the institution of property, written when the subject was at the centre of furious controversy between the parties of revolution and reaction in France. The work is in four parts: the first is concerned with ownership, the second and third with a criticism of communism and socialism and the fourth with taxation. Although Thiers' treatment of his subject is often lacking in decision, especially in the earlier sections, many aspects of this work are of great value. "Le chapitre 'De l'influence de l'hérédité sur le travail', entre autres est un petit chef-d'oeuvre", Molinari in 'Journal des Economistes'. The final section on taxation is perhaps the finest; comparing the State with an insurance company, Thiers demonstrates mathematically the fairness of proportional taxation compared with progressive taxation.
