Cuthbert William Johnson [1799-1878], although a barrister by profession, was a prolific and expert agricultural writer. Brought up on his father's salt works in Essex, he wrote much on salt. As Fussell wrote caustically, "after all, he wrote to sell the stuff". The use of artificial and chemical fertilizers in farming was in any case still at the experimental stage in the 1840s. Johnson's publications included The Farmer's Encyclopaedia, and Dictionary of Rural Affairs [1842] and, with W Shaw, the annual Farmer's Almanac. Price - £175 |
