- [BURKE, William?]
An examination of the commercial principles of the late negotiation between Great Britain and France in 1761 in which the system of that negotiation with regard to our colonies and commerce is considered.  The second edition.  London: R and J Dodsley,  1762  8vo, (2) + 108pp, wanting the half-title, rather browned throughout, title-page coming loose and fore-edge a bit chipped, recently bound in cloth lettered.

Higgs 2721. Goldsmiths 9764. Kress S.4265. Sabin 23354. Todd [Edmund Burke] p.263. See James Ford Bell E.177 (1st ed.). Disagreement over attribution: to William Burke by Higgs and DNB; to Edmund Burke by B.M.; to Edward Burke by Sabin. Todd, however, says that "this was a belated rejoinder to Benjamin Franklin's The Interest of Great Britain Considered (1760), a tract in answer to the Burkean Remarks of that year. This is again assigned in large measure to William, "in part" to Edmund Burke. The second edition was extensively revised and has a postscript on imports and exports. First published the same year, a Postscript (pp.103-108) on imports and exports has been added to this 2nd edition. Burke at the time held the office of secretary to Guadaloupe and, in this tract, strongly advocated British retention of that island. Much of the essay focuses on the British attitude to Canada and the North American colonies vis à vis trade. He felt strongly that England had given up too much and had received too little territory of commercial potential in the treaty with France. William Burke [d. 1798], supposed author of 'Junius's Letters', was a cousin of Edmund Burke and travelled with him in 1752. For many years they lived together in London, and, towards the end of his life, at Beaconsfield.
